Thus, the commitment to the usage-based volume in CG reflects, once again, the difference between formal and cognitive approaches to grammar. The overall aim with a usage-based model of language structure is to “depict the complexity of language use” (Tomasello, 2003, p. 5). Langacker elaborates on this, noting that substantial importance is given to the actual use of the linguistic system and a speaker’s knowledge of this use; the grammar is held responsible for a speaker's knowledge of the full range of linguistic conventions, regardless of whether these conventions can be subsumed under more general statements’ (Langacker, 1987, p.
427; Taylor, 2002, p. 21). Crucially, under the content requirement posited by Langacker (1987; 1999), only the phonological structure, the semantic structure and the symbolic relation between them are necessary to account 6 In Langacker’s 1982 publication, CG was originally titled Space Grammar. Apart from the change of name, the ideas of his theory have never been changed fundamentally (Langacker, 2005, p. 157). 7 The terms symbolic unit and linguistic unit (Evans, 2007, p. 128) are used interchangeably and refer to a unit composed of the phonological and semantic pole and the symbolic structure that holds between them.
The most fundamental concept underlying the usage-based view of language is that of the usage event. According to Langacker (1999; 2007; 2009c), a usage event is an actual, situated instance of language use, which is culturally and contextually embedded and represents an instance of linguistic behaviour (Langacker, 2007, p. 425). Furthermore, usage events have unit-like status and are characterised as consisting of detailed semantic structures, patterns of intonation and grammatical forms. Usage events are established as a cognitive pattern in the language user’s mind when they are sufficiently entrenched and, in consequence, able to be carried out more or less automatically12.
