According to Langacker (1999; 2007; 2009c), a usage event is an actual, situated instance of language use, which is culturally and contextually embedded and represents an instance of linguistic behaviour (Langacker, 2007, p. 425). Furthermore, usage events have unit-like status and are characterised as consisting of detailed semantic structures, patterns of intonation and grammatical forms. Usage events are established as a cognitive pattern in the language user’s mind when they are sufficiently entrenched and, in consequence, able to be carried out more or less automatically12.
